Hello & welcome

Hi, I'm Nicole Helgason

Content creator giving a voice to the ocean.

My story:

I still remember my rush of euphoria the first time I saw a coral reef—a curious new universe unfolding before my eyes.

It was the summer of 2006, and I was on my first scuba diving experience in the Dominican Republic. Growing up in Canada, I had never seen a coral or spent much time in the tropics. However, something I enjoyed every Canadian summer was planting and harvesting a veggie garden with my family.

As we rounded the last boulder of our first dive, I set my eyes on an A-frame-style coral restoration nursery covered in small branches of Acropora coral. This novel technique of ‘growing corals like a garden underwater’ was a lightbulb moment that defined an absolute path, my journey to protect coral reefs and inspire others to look more closely a life below the ocean waves.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve worked in the diving industry as a dive instructor, tourism manager, and coral conservation leader.

Since 2015 I’ve worked as a professional writer and photographer, producing more than one thousand combined articles for both digital and print format.

I work hard to make sure ocean stories come from an original perspective, focusing on corals.

Now more than ever, I see the immense value in documenting natural biodiversity in its current state. We must preserve the essence and memories for future generations with images and stories that spark conversation and maybe, just maybe, encouraging someone like you to take action and reclaim our home on this blue planet.
